Attention deficit disorder is a condition that affects people’s behaviour and results in inattention and impulsivity.
What causes ADD?
The exact cause of attention deficit disorder is unknown. It is thought to be related to genetics as it tends to run in families. Some studies have also found differences in brain function and structure in those affected by the condition, such as certain areas of the brain being bigger or smaller than usual.
What are the symptoms of ADD?
The symptoms of attention deficit disorder include inattention and impulsivity. They usually begin to show in early childhood and can be lifelong.
The main signs of inattention include:
- A short attention span
- Being easily distracted
- Making careless mistakes
- Forgetfulness
- Inability to carry out tedious or time-consuming tasks
- Inability to follow or understand instructions
- Constantly changing tasks
- Difficulties with organisation.
The main signs of impulsivity include:
- Inability to stay settled, focused or interested
- Excessively talking
- Interrupting conversations
- Failing to wait in line or take turns
- Answering before a question is complete.
