What is attention deficit disorder (ADD)?

Attention deficit disorder is a condition that affects people’s behaviour and results in inattention and impulsivity.

What causes ADD?

The exact cause of attention deficit disorder is unknown. It is thought to be related to genetics as it tends to run in families. Some studies have also found differences in brain function and structure in those affected by the condition, such as certain areas of the brain being bigger or smaller than usual.

What are the symptoms of ADD?

The symptoms of attention deficit disorder include inattention and impulsivity. They usually begin to show in early childhood and can be lifelong.

The main signs of inattention include:

  • A short attention span
  • Being easily distracted
  • Making careless mistakes
  • Forgetfulness
  • Inability to carry out tedious or time-consuming tasks
  • Inability to follow or understand instructions
  • Constantly changing tasks
  • Difficulties with organisation.

The main signs of impulsivity include:

  • Inability to stay settled, focused or interested
  • Excessively talking
  • Interrupting conversations
  • Failing to wait in line or take turns
  • Answering before a question is complete.

Caring for someone with attention deficit disorder

Caring for a child affected by ADD can be challenging, but it is important to remember that they cannot help their behaviour. You may have issues getting them to school on time or to sleep at night. In these situations, patience and understanding is key.

We support carers, friends and family too

Are you a carer for or relative of someone with attention deficit disorder? It’s just as important for you to look after your own physical and mental wellbeing too.

The Brain Charity provides free support for carers, friends and family of people with any form of neurological condition, including attention deficit disorder, from anywhere in the UK.

We also run an additional carers advocacy service for all carers in Liverpool, regardless of which type of condition the person they care for has.

You don’t need to be a formal or registered carer

We can help you even if you don’t view yourself as a formal carer or claim Carer’s Allowance. Find out some of the ways we support carers below.
