Tinnitus

Ringing in the ears

What is tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the name given to unexplained sounds in the ears. The sounds are produced from inside the body.

It is not a life-threatening condition, but it can be deeply distressing and have a significant impact on daily life.

What causes tinnitus?

The cause of tinnitus is unknown, but it has been linked to several conditions.

These are:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Hearing loss
  • Meniere’s disease
  • Diabetes
  • Side effects of some medications

What are the symptoms of tinnitus?

The symptoms of tinnitus cause a person to hear a variety of repetitive sounds. The sounds people hear include:

  • Humming
  • Buzzing
  • Ringing
  • Tapping
  • Whistling

These sounds can be heard all day, or at certain times.

They tend to be worse at night, when there are no other sounds to disguise them..
