Set up payroll giving to support The Brain Charity

What is payroll giving?

Payroll giving allows you to make regular, tax-free donations to The Brain Charity directly from your salary.

Donations can be monthly, weekly, or fortnightly. As donations are deducted from your gross pay before tax, the cost is reduced to you.

For example, a £5 donation by a 20% taxpayer only costs £4, with the taxman covering the rest.

The higher the rate of tax you pay, the more cost effective it is to donate via payroll giving.

How can I set up payroll giving as an employee?

We partner with Payroll Giving in Action to make payroll giving easy and accessible for supporters of The Brain Charity.

To sign up to donate to The Brain Charity through your pay, simply complete this form.

Payroll Giving in Action will then get in touch with your employer’s payroll department to check if they have a payroll giving scheme set up. If they don’t, Payroll Giving in Action will help them to set one up with a government approved agency – this is a very quick and straight forward process.

If your company already has a payroll giving scheme, Payroll Giving in Action will arrange for your donation to be included at their earliest convenience. This can take up to 6 weeks depending on payroll deadlines.

Louis’ story: “Coming here was one of the best things I’ve done.”

Payroll giving donations help us to support people living with all forms of neurological conditions – people like Louis.

Louis lives with Neurofibromatosis 1, a genetic condition which causes tumours to grow along his nerves. He was later diagnosed with two life-threatening tumours on his spine, which required a high-risk surgery.

During his recovery, Louis struggled with his mental health saying he “locked himself away” and “was in a really dark place.”

A young man in black T-shirt stands in front of an exterior wall made from wooden cladding.

Louis came to The Brain Charity, where he received free counselling sessions to support his mental health.

He said: “It’s nice to speak to someone and to know that you’re not on your own, you’re not the only one. It was good for me to have someone to speak to and it helped me through problems I was dealing with at that time.”

Louis has also received employment support and now attends our Neuro Gym.

“Coming here was one of the best things I’ve done, I wish I’d done it earlier. The Brain Charity has really helped me get in a better place.”

How can I set up a payroll giving scheme in my company?

If your company does not currently operate a payroll giving scheme, your payroll department can set one up with any government approved agency

This process is incredibly smooth and simple – it usually means only filling out one form and appointing an approved contact within your payroll department. Once your scheme is set up, you will receive a monthly report on a date that suits you detailing the donation amount pledged.

If you are an employee wanting to ask your employer to set up a payroll giving scheme, you can write to them to request they set up a scheme. To help, we have created a template letter you can use to get in touch with your payroll department.

What are the benefits of payroll giving for employers?

Providing payroll giving as an employee benefit is a simple way to show your company’s dedication to charity and support your corporate social responsibility (CSR) goals.

More than half of employees say that working for an employer who supports charities makes them feel proud and increases their loyalty to the company.

With only 4,000 UK companies currently offering payroll giving, providing it as an employee benefit can help your business stand out to potential future hires.

It can also help identify the causes your employees care about. This enables your company to select charities for other CSR initiatives like Charity of the Year partnerships and volunteering days, knowing you can expect a high level of employee engagement.

Companies with a payroll giving scheme may qualify for awards and quality marks like the Payroll Giving Quality Mark – a government-supported accreditation that recognizes organisations promoting and offering a payroll giving scheme.

What are the benefits of donating to The Brain Charity via payroll giving?

For The Brain Charity, payroll giving donations provide a reliable income, helping us plan for the future and maintain our vital services

Payroll giving raises awareness of The Brain Charity and the work we do supporting thousands of people with neurological conditions across the UK.

Employees are likely to donate more due to the tax relief provided by payroll giving compared to other regular donations. This means every payday, The Brain Charity can maximise their contributions.
