Payroll Giving Month 2025: Making a difference every payday

The Brain Charity is proud to join this year’s #PayrollGivingMonth campaign, raising awareness of this simple and tax-efficient way of donating to charity.

What is payroll giving?

Payroll giving is a simple way to support your favourite causes with a regular, tax-free donation.

A monthly, weekly or fortnightly donation to charity will be taken from your salary each payday, before tax is deducted.

This means you pay less for your donation. For example, if a 20% taxpayer donated £5 through payroll giving, they will only pay £4 with the taxman covering the remaining amount.

Payroll giving is a simple and cost-effective way to give, yet only 36% of people have heard of it and  only 4,000 UK businesses offer it as a perk to their employees.

What is #PayrollGivingMonth 2025?

February is Payroll Giving Month, an annual campaign spearheaded by charities across the UK to raise awareness of payroll giving.

The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness of payroll giving to both employers and employees.

I’m an employee, how I can sign up for payroll giving?

The Brain Charity is partnered with Payroll Giving in Action to make payroll giving simple for our supporters.

To sign up for payroll giving, simply fill in this form.

Payroll Giving in Action will contact your payroll department and arrange your donation with them, with no further action required from you.

You can pledge to multiple charities and donate as little as £1 per month.

I’m an employer, how I can set up a payroll giving scheme at work?

Setting up a payroll giving scheme is simple.

  • Fill in the simple form provided by the agency.
  • Nominate a contact within your payroll department.
  • Receive a monthly report of your employee’s pledged donations.

Your preferred payroll giving agency will process the donations and forward them to the charities chosen by your employees.

What are the benefits to companies of setting up payroll giving for your staff?

Over 50% of employees say that having an employer who supports charities makes them feel proud to work there and encourages their loyalty to the company.

As only around 4,000 UK companies currently offer payroll giving, offering it as an employee benefit will improve staff satisfaction and make your business stand out to potential future employees.

Offering payroll giving as an employee benefit is a simple way to demonstrate your company’s charitable commitment and can support your CSR (corporate social responsibility) goals.

Payroll giving is a tax-efficient way of giving for your employees because their donation is taken from their gross pay before tax. This means no matter what they pledge, they will always end up paying less.

It can also help you identify the types of causes your employees care about. This means your company can also launch other CSR initiatives like Charity of the Year partnerships and volunteering days, by choosing a charity you know your employees will be keen to engage with.

Companies running a payroll giving scheme may be eligible for the Payroll Giving Quality Mark, a government-supported accreditation which celebrates organisations for promoting and offering a payroll giving scheme.

What are the benefits of payroll giving to The Brain Charity?

For charities like The Brain Charity, payroll giving donations offer a regular income we can rely on, helping us to forecast for the future and keep our vital services running.

Payroll giving is a great way to introduce more people to The Brain Charity and raise awareness of our vital services, supporting thousands of people with neurological conditions across the UK.

Employees are likely to commit to higher donations due to the tax relief offered by payroll giving versus other regular donations like direct debit and lottery entries. This means The Brain Charity can make their gift go further every payday.
