Dealing with a new diagnosis

There are more than 600 different conditions affecting the brain, spine or nervous system. These are called neurological conditions.

A neurological condition is any condition that affects the brain, spinal cord or nervous system.

Many are well-known, such as strokedementiacluster headaches and ADHD

There are also hundreds of conditions that only affect an unlucky few, such as trigeminal neuralgiaAlice in Wonderland Syndrome and Huntington’s disease.

Some neurological conditions can begin suddenly, such as brain injury. Some you are born with, such as epilepsy. Others, like multiple sclerosis, can develop over time.

The Brain Charity is the only charity in the UK to be here for every single one of them.

How The Brain Charity can help

We understand the impact of a new neurological diagnosis can be wide-ranging.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by medical jargon. Our staff can provide practical information, telling you in plain English what a diagnosis means and what a future living with your condition might look like.

The Brain Charity’s officers can advise you on how to apply for benefits, manage your caring responsibilities, apply for aids and housing adaptations, get expert legal advice and know your rights at work.

Getting employment advice at The Brain Charity

We can show you where to find disability friendly holidays and look for a new job, or introduce you to a like-minded community via support groups, social activities, volunteering opportunities and The Brain Food Café.

We also have a free, public library stocked with thousands of books and leaflets, which can be accessed online here or in person at our centre, and an online A&Z of neurological conditions.

If you are struggling with your mental health, you can access counselling and befriending through The Brain Charity too. You can also find answers to some of the most common questions our team are asked about neurological conditions here.
